D2 is typically bought to meet chemistry requirements rather than physical requirements. For that reason, physical properties are generally not provided unless requested prior to production. Any material can be sent to a third party after production to be tested for physical properties.

What is D2 Drill Rod?

D2 Drill Rod is D2 Tool Steel round stock that has been ground to a very tight tolerance. Buying this ground rod lets you get straight to making your part(s) because no upfront preparation is required. In addition to grade D-2, drill rod is available in other grades (see below). D2 is air-hardened and has a higher alloy content which makes it the toughest of the drill rod grades.

D-2 is a very deep hardening steel and will be practically free from size change after proper treatment. The high percentage of chromium gives it mild corrosion-resisting properties in the hardened condition. It has low machinability and grindability, with a medium resistance to decarburization.
